Diario Las Américas on Miami-Dade #SanctuaryCities event

Spanish-language newspaper Diario Las Américas covered our sanctuary cities/welcoming communities panel discussion and screening of the “Deportation of Innocence” film:

…the event, organized by the group “Campaign to Defend Local Solutions” (launched in 2017 by the Mayor of Tallahassee, Andrew Gillum), aims to combat the national tendency of states to try to take power, through proposals of law, from the local governments in subjects like minimum salary, the defense of minorities, and the protection of the environment, among others.”

Also present in the Miami Dade College auditorium were Democratic State Senator Jose Javier Rodríguez, who is a candidate for U.S. Congress for the 27th District, a position that will be vacated by the Republican Ileana Ros Lehtinen, and County Commissioner for the 8th District, Daniella Levine Cava.

Rodriguez was the keynote speaker. He spoke of “creating a favorable environment in Tallahassee,” developed by organizations and people defending undocumented immigrants, both to defeat anti-immigrant proposals and to pursue laws that favor that community.
